In a recent meeting at the Lango Cultural Center, Dokolo South Member of Parliament Felix Okot Ogong applauded the efforts of Won Nyaci of Lango, Eng. Dr. Michael Moses Odongo Okune, in fostering a democratic dialogue among regional leaders.
Okot Ogong emphasized that Dr. Okune’s commitment to establishing democracy in Lango is crucial, allowing diverse voices to come together to express their visions for development in the region.
During his address, Okot Ogong recounted a historical context where the people of Lango had not actively participated in presidential elections.
However, he noted a positive trend: increased voter turnout, signaling that the aspirations and voices of the Lango people are starting to resonate within national governance.
This shift reflects a growing awareness and engagement among the electorate, catalyzing a new era of political participation in Lango.
Maj Gen Keith Katungi, commander of the 5th Infantry Division, also attended the meeting and shared insights on the urgent needs of Lango.
He revealed that he has compiled a list of requests that will be formally presented to the President.
This documentation aims to ensure that the needs and concerns of the region are recognized and addressed effectively.
Eng. Dr. Michael Moses Odongo Okune, the paramount chief of Lango, expressed a pressing desire for collaborative discussions among leaders to develop actionable plans for the advancement of the region. During the meeting, he highlighted five critical issues that warrant immediate attention: poverty, lack of education, disease, unemployment among educated individuals, and cultural dynamics that exacerbate economic challenges.
Odongo Okune’s concerns underline the multifaceted nature of the struggles faced by the Lango community.
Looking ahead, Odongo Okune proposed an ambitious agenda for government initiatives over the next five years.
His vision includes appointing Lango youth to key government roles, including ministerial positions, with the hope of eradicating poverty and enhancing healthcare and educational services.
Furthermore, he stressed the importance of promoting Lango culture and securing the region’s borders to protect local interests from external pressures.

Advancements in business, technology, and the transformation of Amach market into a thriving commercial hub are also central to his developmental goals.
To spearhead these initiatives, a committee comprising 17 members was established after the meeting, led by Lango Prime Minister Professor Willy Okullo.
This committee is charged with drafting a comprehensive document that various groups within Lango can utilize to seek development assistance from the government.
As Lango moves forward, the collective efforts of its leaders and the active participation of its citizens will be vital.
The commitment to fostering democratic practices, addressing critical socio-economic challenges, and advocating for tangible government support will shape a brighter future for the region.
