Several patients and residents in Agago district have voiced serious concerns regarding the conduct of health workers at Patongo Health Centre IV in Patongo town council, accusing them of harassment, absenteeism, and negligence.
The facility, which receives between 100 to 150 patients daily from various sub counties within Agago district and beyond, is reportedly facing growing dissatisfaction among the communities it serves.
Patients who spoke to Radio Wang Ooh FM alleged that some health workers are verbally and physically abusive, particularly in the Maternity and Outpatient wards. Others claim they are frequently turned away due to the absence of medical personnel.
Anna Akello, a resident of Opota trading centre in Geregere sub county, stated that health workers regularly abandon their duties over the weekend, leaving patients stranded. She called on the government to take firm disciplinary action against the non-compliant staff.
Okot Spanner, an LCI aspirant for Jungle cell in Patongo town council, said the poor service delivery has led some patients to stop seeking treatment at the health centre altogether.
In response, Dr. Samantha Angeyo, the in-charge of Patongo Health Center IV, dismissed the accusations, saying they are baseless and intended to tarnish the reputation of the facility.
Agago district leadership has acknowledged the complaints. Leonard Ojok, the LCV Chairperson, confirmed that his office has received similar reports regarding health workers at Patongo and other facilities within the district. He warned that the district would take stern action, including striking names off the payroll for staff found guilty of absenteeism.
Kidega Nok, the Resident District Commissioner of Agago, also weighed in, urging health workers to uphold professional standards and treat patients with dignity. He stressed that his office would not tolerate harassment or negligence in the health sector.
