Pader district water department Adopts ‘Name and Shame’ Initiative against Leaders without Pit Latrines.

Pader Water department has adopted the “name and shame” intervention against elected leaders and officials who lack sanitary facilities in their household in a bid to increase the latrine coverage in the district.

Speaking during the district level advocacy meeting at the district council hall on Wednesday 27th March 2024, the Pader district water officer, Olanya Patrick says they will start compiling the “name and shame” list with aims of improving the sanitary standards in the district.

According to statistics, the Sanitation coverage stands at only 69%, hand washing 43%, bath shelters 72% and drying racks 56.2%.

Olanya however announced that the “name and shame” list that will be compaile during their monitoring will includes CIII Chairpersons, sub county councilors, LCI Chairpersons, Community Development Officers and parish chiefs amidst others.  

According to Olanya, leaders ought to be exemplary in any society because the absence of latrines and other sanitary facilities in their homes compromises their authority to implore the people, they lead to possess latrines and other sanitary facilities in their homes.   

He added that the name and shame initiative is meant to compel the leaders and officials to construct their own latrines and mobilize the local community against open defecation.

Sire Michael, the deputy resident district commissioner (DRDC) Pader who closed the meeting said local communities need to be sensitized on the importance of having the sanitary facilities at their home.

He however appeals to the lower local governments and local village councils to enact public health bylaws that will decisively penalize residents without improved toilets and other basic family hygiene facilities.
