In a significant show of support for youth sports in Kioga County, Member of Parliament Junior Okot Betek has committed 1.6 million shillings and sports uniforms to the qualified post-primary football teams in the region. His dedication to fostering sports among young people was evident during his visit to several schools on Saturday, where he aimed to enhance their preparedness for the upcoming regional post-primary games.
The journey began at Agwingiri Girls Secondary School, where Betek generously donated 200,000 shillings along with footballs. During his visit, he assured the enthusiastic students that they would also receive sports uniforms to better equip them for their participation in the league. This gesture of encouragement was met with resounding gratitude from both students and staff alike.
Continuing his rounds, Betek made a similar contribution at Alemere Comprehensive Secondary School, where he provided cash, a football, and pledged to donate a bull for a celebration scheduled for March 29, 2025. His proactive approach in contributing to both sports and community events underlines his commitment to supporting local initiatives.
At Muntu Seed Secondary School, the MP addressed student concerns regarding their limited facilities for viewing football matches. In response, he promised to donate a screen, ensuring that students could gather to watch games together—a small yet meaningful step towards enhancing their school experience.
In his address, Betek announced a further commitment to assist the three participating schools by providing a total of 1 million shillings to help cover their feeding needs during the regional tournament—a crucial support as they prepare for competitive play.
The school’s headteachers expressed both gratitude and challenges faced. The headteacher of Agwingiri Girls Secondary School commended Betek for his generous support but also emphasized the urgent need for essential facilities such as dormitories, conference halls, and staff quarters. Meanwhile, the deputy headteacher of Alemere Comprehensive Secondary School highlighted the new curriculum demands and the insufficient accommodation facilities available for students.
Goffrey Ogangi, the headteacher of Muntu Seed Secondary School, reinforced the call for government intervention as his institution faces numerous challenges as a seed secondary school.
Throughout his visits, Junior Okot Betek encouraged the students to prioritize their education and urged them to avoid early marriages, reinforcing the importance of creating a supportive environment for youth development in Kioga County.
This initiative not only highlights Betek’s commitment to sports but also his understanding of the multifaceted challenges faced by educational institutions in the region. With such efforts, the future of youth sports and education in Kioga County looks promising.
