During the launch, a representative of Papa Kumam, John Bosco, who also holds the title of Won Etok Kumam Amolatar and Won Ebuku of Atek Olaki Ekalu, delivered a compelling message urging his fellow Kumam people to take an active role in addressing their community’s pressing issues.
He emphasised that reliance on government aid should not be the primary strategy; instead, self-initiative and communal effort should take the lead in establishing the Kumam Cultural Centre. This centre is envisioned as a hub for educational facilities, equipping the youth of Amolatar with essential skills for the job market.
Adding to the momentum, Mr Ochan Kadai Joel, known as Won Ebuk Ararak Me Amodo, appealed to well-wishers and philanthropists for generous contributions towards the construction efforts and the forthcoming visit of Papa Kumam in May. His appeal underscored the importance of community support in bringing this ambitious project to fruition.
Elders, including Mr Ewelu Ewelu Steven, representing the Kumam Cultural Forum, emphasised the importance of unity among various tribes in supporting initiatives that promote Kumam culture alongside the cultures of neighbouring communities. His remarks highlighted that cultural appreciation transcends tribal boundaries and serves as a foundation for collective growth and understanding.
The need for immediate action was further echoed by Akullu Agness, a dedicated member of the Kumam community. She encouraged everyone to unite in ensuring the Kumam Cultural Centre—the proposed youth skills centre—becomes a reality. Akullu emphasised that such a centre is vital for addressing youth unemployment and promoting sustainable development within the community.
In an effort to reassure potential donors about the management of the funds raised, Miss Akullu affirmed that every contribution would be used diligently and responsibly, reflecting the community’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
As the Kumam community embarks on this important journey, it is poised not only to preserve its rich cultural heritage but also to empower its youth through education and skills development. The efforts to build the Kumam Cultural Centre symbolise a proactive approach to addressing local challenges and enhancing community resilience through collective action.
