On May 22, 2025, FAPAD (facilitation for peace and development) officially launched its new initiative, the Sustainable Resilience Project, aimed at enhancing environmental resilience and supporting smallholder farmers in Amolatar district.
The launch event took place at the district headquarters, where Ms. Acot Grace, the Programs Manager of FAPAD, outlined the initiative’s goals and operational timeline.
The project, funded by Vi Agroforestry with an investment exceeding 200 million, is set to span eight months from May to December 2025.
It will be implemented across 16 villages within eight parishes in the Akwon and Agikdak sub-counties.
Ms. Grace emphasized that the project aims to benefit various stakeholders, particularly focusing on schools and families of smallholder farmers, by enhancing their resilience to climate change, reducing agro ecosystem degradation, and promoting biodiversity.
During the launch, Mr. Erick Ocen , the Senior Environment Officer of Amolatar district, expressed his gratitude to FAPAD for its commendable initiatives.
He noted that the project would significantly aid in land protection and provide essential training for farmers in sustainable practices such as kitchen gardening.
“We appreciate FAPAD’s efforts in promoting sustainable agriculture, which aligns perfectly with our district’s goals for environmental conservation.” He added.
Mr. Odongo James, representing the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), also praised the impactful nature of the project.
He urged stakeholders to fully support the initiative, emphasizing the need for proper soil management practices.
“Soil management is crucial. We must prevent soil degradation by utilizing appropriate crops that enhance rather than harm soil health.” Odongo said.
He encouraged local children and the community to engage in practices that foster environmental stewardship, highlighting the importance of educating the next generation in sustainable living.
“It’s vital for our youth to learn about protecting our environment; they are the stewards of tomorrow.” He added.
In addition, Mr. Odongo expressed appreciation for FAPAD’s provision of energy-efficient stoves, which would help reduce the dependence on tree cutting for firewood, thus contributing positively to environmental conservation efforts.
“These energy stoves are a significant step towards reducing our carbon footprint and conserving our forests.” Said Odongo.
He further mentioned that the district is committed to implementing the President’s Executive Order No. 3, which mandates strict adherence to environmental protection measures across all government entities.
“This initiative is not just a project; it’s a vital part of our commitment to ensuring a sustainable future for Amolatar.” He added.
Additionally, the Local Council Three Chairperson of Akwon Mr. Ayaa Robert requested FAPAD’s assistance in educating the community about suitable crops and tree species that promote soil health.
He pointed out that many farmers are currently using harmful species, which further degrades the soil.
“We need guidance on which crops and trees to plant that will nurture our land instead of damaging it.” Ayaa said.
Through the Sustainable Resilience Project, FAPAD aims to train over 450 smallholder farming families in beekeeping practices and establish eight beekeeping demonstration sites. Of this youth will be 120, female 288 and 72 male. This initiative not only seeks to bolster local biodiversity but also to provide communities with alternative livelihoods that align with environmental sustainability.
With the collaboration of local leaders and organizations, the Sustainable Resilience Project promises to lay a foundation for a more resilient and environmentally conscious community in Amolatar.
