On 5 and 8 December 2025, Fapad facilitated an important community dialogue in Akwon and Agikdak subcounties to mark the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. The initiative aimed to encourage discussions on domestic issues, emphasising the urgent need for community involvement in tackling gender-based violence.
During the dialogue, Mr Otile Patrick, the district community development officer, highlighted the crucial role men play in addressing domestic problems. He called for a transformation in lifestyles, urging men to reconsider their actions to promote healthier family environments.
“Alcohol consumption is a major contributor to domestic problems within families,” Mr Otile stated. He advocated for regulating alcohol use as a preventative measure against violence at home.
He also addressed the harmful effects of cultural norms and beliefs that exacerbate domestic violence.
“Domestic violence leads to family breakdowns, and it is imperative that couples avoid these destructive behaviours,” Mr Otile noted.
Contributing to the discussion, Mr Ogwang Bonniface, the subcounty chief of Agikdak, raised serious concerns about the widespread issue of young women being impregnated and subsequently abandoned. He asserted that such actions pose a significant threat to the future of the community.
He emphasised the importance of the community being receptive to advice and support when seeking solutions to familial problems.
Mr Bonniface expressed gratitude to Fapad for their contributions and the positive changes observed in Agikdak and surrounding areas.
With the harvest season in full swing, he noted that incidents of domestic violence tend to increase, a concerning trend that must not be ignored.
Emmanuel Ojok, another community member, urged couples to recognise the value of every family member, advocating for unity to prevent family breakdown.
The community echoed a call for forgiveness and courage, emphasising the need for couples to stay united in the face of challenges.
In his closing remarks, Mr Otanga Tommy, the chairperson of the local council three, expressed his appreciation to Fapad for initiating this important discussion within his subcounty. He acknowledged the concerning number of domestic violence cases that continue to affect the area.
As Uganda joins the global observance of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, this year’s theme, “United to End Digital Violence Against Women and Girls”, resonates strongly, highlighting the need for collective action to eliminate all forms of violence against women.
