On December 5th and 8th, 2025, Fapad facilitated a vital community dialogue in Akwon and Agikdak subcounty to mark the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. This initiative aimed to foster discussions centered on domestic issues, emphasising the urgent need for community engagement in addressing gender-based violence.
During the dialogue, Mr. Otile Patrick, the district community development officer, highlighted the critical role men play in mitigating domestic problems. He called for a transformation in lifestyles, urging men to reconsider their actions to foster healthier family environments.
“Alcohol consumption is a significant contributor to domestic issues within families,” Mr. Otile stated. He advocated for regulating alcohol use as a preventative measure against violence at home.
Additionally, he spoke about the detrimental effects of harmful cultural norms and beliefs that exacerbate domestic violence.
Mr. Otile noted, “Domestic violence results in family breakdowns, and it’s imperative that couples avoid these destructive behaviors.”
Adding to the discourse, Mr. Ogwang Bonniface, the subcounty chief of Agikdak, raised alarming concerns about the prevalent issue of young women being impregnated and subsequently abandoned. He asserted that such behaviors pose a significant threat to the future of the community.
He emphasised the need for the community to be open to advice and assistance when seeking solutions to familial problems.
Mr. Bonniface expressed gratitude towards Fapad for their contributions and the positive developments witnessed in Agikdak and beyond.
With the harvest season in full swing, he pointed out that there tends to be an uptick in incidents of domestic violence, a concerning trend that cannot be overlooked.
Emmanuel Ojok, another community member, urged couples to appreciate the importance of every family member, advocating for unity to prevent family disintegration.
The community’s sentiments echoed a call for forgiveness and bravery, emphasising the need for couples to remain united amidst challenges.
In his closing remarks, Mr. Otanga Tommy, the chairperson of the local council three, conveyed his appreciation to Fapad for initiating this critical discussion within his subcounty. He acknowledged the troubling number of domestic violence cases that persist in the area.
As Uganda joins the global effort to observe the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, the theme this year, “United to End Digital Violence Against Women and Girls,” resonates profoundly, highlighting the need for collective action in eradicating all forms of violence against women.
