In a heartfelt appeal to students returning home for the holidays, Ms Molly Ayo, Environment Officer for Amolatar District Local Government, has emphasised the pivotal role young innovators can play in environmental conservation.

During an interview with our reporter, Ayo urged students enrolled in higher education institutions to channel their knowledge and creativity into developing appropriate cooking devices, such as solar-powered appliances.

“By harnessing the power of the sun, we can reduce our reliance on traditional fuels that contribute to environmental degradation,” Ayo stated.

Her emphasis on innovation stands as a beacon of hope for sustainable living.

On the issue of waste disposal, Ayo strongly condemned the practice of open burning, which poses significant risks to both public health and the environment. “Open burning is not advisable,” she stated, highlighting the importance of responsible waste management.

Instead, she recommended that materials, particularly polythene bags, be handled with care and, if necessary, disposed of through controlled burning before being released into the community.

This method aims to minimise harmful emissions while keeping the environment safe for all.

Ayo’s message extended beyond innovative cooking solutions; she encouraged both students and holidaymakers to actively participate in effective waste management practices within their communities. “Preventing soil and land degradation starts with how we manage our waste,” Ayo noted.

By promoting recycling and proper disposal methods, individuals can make a significant contribution to the health of their surroundings, fostering a cleaner and more sustainable living environment.

Another key point Ayo highlighted was the choice between organic manure and chemical fertilisers. She strongly advocated for the use of organic solutions to maintain soil health and fertility. “If we wish to safeguard our agricultural land for future generations, using organic fertilisers is essential,” she explained.

This proactive approach not only improves soil quality but also supports biodiversity and the stability of ecosystems.
