Silvia Alaba, a businesswoman and women’s advocate from Apalepee ward in Amolatar, has launched a comprehensive family integrated plan for 2026-2027 that promotes climate-smart farming to address climate change impacts.

Residing in Apalepee ward of Amolatar town council, Ms. Silvia Alaba—a dedicated businesswoman and advocate for women—has unveiled her comprehensive family integrated plan focusing on climate-smart agricultural practices to combat the adverse effects of climate change.

Her initiative for the 2026-2027 period highlights sustainable farming methods designed to enhance food security, environmental resilience, and economic stability.

Since embarking on her climate-smart journey in 2024, Silvia has actively demonstrated practical solutions tailored to her local environment.

Utilizing a small-scale irrigation system supported by a personally dug water source within her compound, she efficiently waters a diverse array of crops.

Spanning several acres, her farm includes yams, vegetables, onions, coffee, carrots, and an impressive collection of over 600 spice trees. This diversified approach not only boosts productivity but also promotes biodiversity.

In addition to crop cultivation, Silvia has diversified into poultry farming to generate local manure from bird droppings, enriching her soil naturally and reducing dependency on chemical fertilizers.

This integrated method underscores her commitment to sustainability and resourcefulness.

Her passion for climate-smart farming was inspired by a collaboration with a friend from Zimbabwe, who emphasized the importance of adapting agricultural practices to changing climatic conditions. Silvia’s initial foray began with the establishment of a kitchen garden that has since bolstered both her household’s food security and financial savings.

Looking ahead, Silvia plans to extend her knowledge by training more women in these innovative techniques.

She believes empowering women with climate-smart skills will help communities overcome persistent food shortages and economic challenges by ensuring reliable access to nutritious food directly from their own backyards.

Ms.Silvia Alaba on why smart farming

The district’s entomologist and Uganda Climate Smart Agricultural Transformation Project focal point, Mr. Okello Dulson, praised Silvia’s proactive efforts.

He called on other farmers in the region to embrace similar resilient practices, stressing that climate-smart agriculture is vital to mitigating the risks posed by unpredictable weather patterns and potential famines.

Through her leadership, Silvia Alaba sets an inspiring example for integrating family-based farming strategies with environmental stewardship, paving the way toward a more secure and sustainable agricultural future in Amolatar and beyond.
