Apac, UgandaMore than five students of Apac Seed Secondary School were injured following a violent attack by suspected community members during a school event held on Easter night.

The incident occurred at around 10:00 PM as the school hosted a talent show party to mark the Easter celebrations. According to the school headteacher, Mr. Akeba James, the situation escalated when a group of male students went to fetch water from a borehole near the girls’ dormitory.

While there, the students reportedly noticed an unfamiliar man near the dormitory. When they attempted to question him, the suspect fled, leading them toward a group of other individuals who were allegedly hiding nearby.

It is reported that the group, armed with pangas and knives, attacked the students, leaving several injured. Among those admitted at Apac General Hospital are Awany Bruce (Senior Four), Ojok Ivan Okabo (Senior Four), and Oyila Jonathan, along with other victims.

The attackers are said to have fled the scene after the students raised an alarm, attracting attention from others within the school.

The Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Apac District, Andrew Onyuk, confirmed the incident, stating that police responded swiftly and have since arrested nine suspects who are currently detained at Apac Prison. He noted that more suspects are still at large, and investigations are ongoing.

Preliminary findings suggest that the violence may have stemmed from a dispute involving the students and the attackers over girls during the event, which reportedly involved interaction between students and members of the surrounding community.

The RDC further criticized the school administration for what he described as weak control over student activities, particularly allowing night events that involve members of the public.

Local leaders have also raised concerns. Okelo Kenneth, the LC1 Chairperson of the area, noted that frequent night dances and loud music in the area often attract outsiders, some of whom may pose a threat to the community.

Police have assured the public that efforts are underway to apprehend the remaining suspects and restore calm. Attempts to obtain a comment from the North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson, Jimmy Patrick Okema, were unsuccessful by the time of filing this report.
