Geoffrey Oneka, an office assistant at the Resident State Attorney’s office in Pader district, was arrested today by the Inspectorate of Government (IG) on charges of extortion. The arrest follows allegations that Oneka demanded Shs 1 million from a complainant to expedite the prosecution of a rape suspect committed to the High Court.

According to sources, Oneka, who is in his 30s, solicited the bribe under the pretence of needing funds for transport costs related to the court hearing. The complainant, who chose to remain anonymous, reported the demand to the IG.

“We provided the complainant with the money, which was handed over to Oneka in a controlled sting operation,” said Nicholas Kajura, IG Head for Northern Uganda. “Oneka accepted Shs 400,000 before he was apprehended.” Kajura confirmed that further investigations will be conducted to determine Oneka’s fate.
