A Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) officer was tragically killed in a hit-and-run incident at a security checkpoint in Amuru district on Wednesday morning.
The incident occurred at around 5:45 am when a bus, Reg. No. UAP 763H, belonging to Friendship Bus Company, was en route to Juba, South Sudan. The bus struck a checkpoint at Akurukwe Police Post along the Gulu-Elegu highway. A tyre used to reinforce the checkpoint hit UPDF officer L/CPL Awio Peter, attached to the 4th Division, causing severe injuries.
According to Ongom David Mudong, the Police spokesperson for Aswa West, “The bus driver failed to stop at the scene. He was later intercepted and arrested at Atiak Police Station, where he remains in custody pending further investigations.”
Mudong also mentioned that “The injured officer was rushed to Lacor Hospital in Gulu for treatment, but he tragically succumbed to injuries.” The police cordoned off and documented the scene of the accident as part of their ongoing investigation.
Mudong further urged motorists to exercise caution, stating, “Motorists should maintain discipline on the road and respect officers on duty.”
The case file will be submitted to the Resident State Attorney for review and further legal action.
