Police and other security agencies have heightened security ahead of the annual Wipolo Shrine pilgrimage scheduled for Tuesday, 20 October 2026, in Agago District.
The security agencies have urged pilgrims and the general public to remain vigilant against opportunistic criminals expected to take advantage of the large crowds attending the religious gathering.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the territorial police in Agago District, under the Aswa East Region, warned that the annual pilgrimage attracts thousands of worshippers from across Uganda and beyond, creating opportunities for criminals to engage in housebreaking, theft, phone and bag snatching, and robbery.
Police have advised pilgrims to safeguard their personal belongings and property throughout the celebrations.
Drivers have been urged to avoid overloading their vehicles, observe speed limits and ensure their vehicles are in good mechanical condition before embarking on their journeys.
Pilgrims and other stakeholders have also been asked to cooperate with security personnel and promptly report suspicious activities or any incidents requiring police attention.
The statement added that the Agago District Police Commander had developed operational orders outlining security deployment plans in coordination with other security agencies.
The Police Public Relations Officer for the North Kyoga Region and acting PRO for the Aswa West and Aswa East regions, Superintendent of Police PJ Okema, said security agencies remained committed to maintaining law and order before, during and after the celebrations.
The annual Wipolo Shrine pilgrimage is a major religious gathering that draws Christians from different parts of Uganda and beyond for prayers and spiritual reflection.
