Agago Deputy Resident District Commissioner, Ms Susan Akot Moro, has issued a stern warning regarding imminent arrests following reports of extortion by SACCO leaders. In an interview with our reporter on Wednesday, 21 August 2024, Ms Akot expressed her determination to address these concerns and ensure the fair distribution of Parish Development Model (PDM) funds.
“I am committed to overseeing all government programmes, including the PDM, and ensuring that funds are distributed fairly,” Ms Akot stated. She acknowledged the President’s decision to give her a second chance as Deputy RDC and emphasised her dedication to this role.
Ms Akot revealed that beneficiaries in Agago district are now receiving their PDM funds, totalling over Shs 3 billion, distributed among 4,336 individuals. However, she raised concerns about SACCO leaders who are reportedly extorting money from beneficiaries.
“Some leaders are demanding additional payments under the guise of operational costs, which are meant to be covered by the programme itself,” Ms Akot explained. She noted that the operational costs in question amount to approximately Shs 500,000.
Criticising the actions of these leaders, Ms Akot said, “Their extortion activities are hindering the work of other executives and creating unnecessary obstacles.” She particularly highlighted severe issues in Lira-Kato Subcounty and promised to provide further details regarding the arrests of the suspects
Adding to the concerns, Agago district planner, Mr Bongomin Akal, who is the focal person for the PDM in Agago, confirmed that his office has frequently received complaints about extortion. “We are aware of the issues and are preparing to embark on arrests soon,” Mr Akal said.
In light of these issues, Ms Akot advised local residents against paying extra money, stating that all costs associated with the PDM are already covered. She reaffirmed her commitment to ensuring transparency and accountability in the distribution of funds, emphasising that any form of corruption or extortion will not be tolerated.
