Te-kworo foundation commits UGX 105 Million to take seven Girls to university

Te-Kworo Foundation has committed UGX 105 million to support seven pioneer Kworo High School girls through university, covering their education needs throughout their study period. The initiative expands the foundation’s support beyond secondary education, breaking financial barriers, empowering vulnerable girls, and creating future professionals in the Acholi Sub-region.

Te-kworo Foundation has committed UGX 105 million to support seven vulnerable girls from Kworo high school to pursue university education, in a landmark initiative aimed at ensuring that financial challenges do not end the academic dreams of girls in the Acholi Sub-region.

The seven girls, who are the pioneer students of the school’s Advanced Level section, were celebrated during a send-off ceremony On Thursday, 6 August 2026, at the school premises after completing Senior Six and an internship programme that exposed them to different professional fields within the foundation.

The seven beneficiaries will join Gulu University, with many pursuing Bachelor of Education programmes as they prepare to become future teachers and professionals who will contribute to the development of their communities.

Jane Stella Okot, the Education Coordinator at Tekworo Foundation, said the decision to sponsor the girls through university was reached after the organisation realised that many brilliant learners risked dropping out despite completing secondary education.

She explained that the foundation introduced the A-Level section following changes in Uganda’s education curriculum, which affected some vocational pathways that previously allowed learners to continue with professional training after O-Level.

“Many of our girls completed Senior Six but could not proceed to university because their families could not afford the costs. We did not want their dreams to end there,” Okot said.

She added that Tekworo Foundation was established during the Lord’s Resistance Army insurgency to support girls who returned from captivity with children and faced rejection and lack of opportunities to continue their education.

Today, the organisation supports child mothers, orphans, girls from extremely poor families, survivors of gender-based violence and other vulnerable learners.

The foundation operates three campuses, including Pader Campus with 712 girls, Nwoya Campus with 250 learners mainly supporting girls with babies, and Kitgum Campus with about 76 students undertaking vocational training in tailoring and catering.

More than 4,000 girls have graduated from Tekworo Foundation programmes, with many now working as nurses, midwives, teachers and other professionals.

Obwa Milton, the Deputy Executive Director of Tekworo Foundation, said each beneficiary will receive about UGX 15 million over three years to support university studies.

He said the foundation has already invested about UGX 90 million in secondary education support over the past six years and is now expanding its commitment to higher education.

Milton encouraged parents to continue guiding their daughters while urging the beneficiaries to remain disciplined and focused on their studies.

Assistant District Education Officer for Pader, Mrs. Fielder Lalam, praised the foundation for addressing the growing challenge of girls dropping out of school due to poverty, hunger, early marriages and gender-based violence.

She said many schools are witnessing a sharp decline in girls’ attendance, adding that Tekworo Foundation’s provision of affordable education, meals, accommodation and learning materials has helped vulnerable girls remain in school.

One of the beneficiaries, Lapolo Petra Loisa from Agriculture Village in Pader Sub-county, who will pursue a Bachelor of Education at Gulu University, expressed gratitude to the foundation for giving her an opportunity she never thought possible.

“I thank Tekworo Foundation for believing in me. Because of my family’s financial situation, I never imagined that I would reach university,” Lapolo said.

Atim Rose Mary, a resident of Pader Town Council and mother to Anena Gladys, said she could not have managed the cost of university education without the foundation’s support.

“I know I would never have raised the amount of money required for university. Tekworo Foundation has lifted this burden from me and given my daughter hope for a brighter future,” Atim said.

She promised to continue supporting and guiding her daughter throughout her studies and urged the scholarship beneficiaries to remain focused and disciplined.

Owiny John Santo, a resident of Arum Sub-county in Agago District and father to Adyero Rose Mary, also commended Tekworo Foundation and Kuor iSchool for caring for learners from Senior One up to university level.

He said the school had provided a safe and supportive environment that gave parents confidence that their children were receiving quality education and guidance.

“Without this scholarship, I do not believe my daughter would have reached university because of the financial challenges we face as a family,” Owiny said.

He added that the foundation’s support had relieved parents of a burden they could not manage alone and pledged to continue encouraging their children to complete their education.

The university sponsorship marks a new chapter in Tekworo Foundation’s journey of empowering girls through education and creating future professionals who will contribute to development across the Acholi Sub-region and Uganda.
