The local government of Amolatar district, with the assistance of Col. Dr. John Francis Ongia, has provided the Village Health Team in Kioga County with gumboots to facilitate their work and ensure their protection.
The primary focus was to enhance the working conditions of these dedicated health workers by providing them with essential gumboots.
During the distribution of the gumboots on June 22, 2025, at the Amolatar district headquarters, Col. Dr. Ongia expressed his concern upon witnessing a VHT working in worn-out tires, which prompted him to consider providing gumboots for their safety.
. He remarked, “It is crucial that we provide our health workers with the necessary tools to perform their duties safely. These gumboots will protect them as they serve our communities.”
In addition, Col. Ongia allocated 2 million Ugandan shillings to the VHT district coordinator for the purchase of a motorcycle.
“Your support has been invaluable in making this meeting possible, and I appreciate your efforts in championing the cause of our health teams,” he stated.
He also expressed gratitude to the CAO and DHO for enabling him to meet the VHTs, who are performing commendable work in the villages without any compensation.
The district coordinator Odit Moses VHTs Amolatar who represented CAO Paul Samule Mpiiwa mentioned that this is the first time since 2002 that a welwisher has supported the VHTs.
Furthermore, Mr. Olal Tom VHT sub county coordinator Muntu expressed his appreciation to Col. Ongia for the provision of gumboots and requested him to explore options for bicycles.
He also acknowledged the fellow VHTs for their dedication to treating children without remuneration, urging Col. Ongia to assist them in a manner similar to the payment system for Lira VHTs.
The event concluded with a renewed sense of purpose and commitment among the VHTs, bolstered by the generous support of Col. Dr. Ongia. With these practical gestures, it is evident that the local government of Amolatar district is taking vital steps toward empowering its health teams, ensuring they are equipped and motivated to continue their essential work in the community.
