On Friday, 26 September 2025, Fapad (Facilitation for Peace and Development) officially launched a tree-planting campaign in Agikdak Sub county, marking a significant step towards environmental conservation and climate change mitigation.
The initiative began with the distribution of fifty guwavela seedlings, aimed at enhancing local agrarian practices and fostering a greener community.
Bonny Okwir, a representative from Fapad, shared the organisation’s vision for the project, stating,
“We commenced this initiative in Agikdak Sub county to promote tree planting as a means of combating climate change and other related environmental challenges.”
He assured local farmers that Fapad would maintain a nursery bed in the sub-county, where trees will be available for ongoing distribution, making it easier for everyone to participate in this vital environmental effort.
Emphasising the critical role trees play in the ecosystem, Ocen Erick noted,
“Mothers suffer greatly in the absence of trees.”
He urged community members to recognise the vital importance of planting trees around their homes.
Erick also offered valuable guidance on selecting suitable tree species, informing farmers that:“there are tree species that do not compete with crops,”
Thereby encouraging them to explore options that can coexist harmoniously with their agricultural practices.
The event was warmly received by local leadership, with Hon. Tommy Otanga, Chairperson of Local Council III in Agikdak, expressing his gratitude to Fapad.
He commended the education provided to farmers on the importance of tree planting and welcomed the fifty seedlings planted as part of the campaign.
“This initiative is a step towards a healthier environment,” he stated.
In addition, Mr. Ogwang Bonny, the SACAO of Agikdak, expressed his appreciation for Fapad’s efforts, thanking the organisation for supporting the government in training farmers on tree planting and its significance.
He emphasised that such collaborations are vital for promoting sustainable agricultural practices within the community.
As the tree-planting campaign gains momentum in Agikdak Sub county, the combined efforts of Fapad, local leaders, and the farming community represent a promising initiative to improve environmental health, strengthen climate change resilience, and boost agricultural productivity in the region.
