In light of recent intelligence reports, the police and security agencies in the Lango sub-region have issued a stern warning to supporters of the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) against organising or participating in illegal demonstrations.
The warnings follow indications that some UPC supporters are reportedly planning to instigate riots on 29 September 2025, starting in Lira City and potentially spreading to other districts within North Kyoga.
The planned demonstrations are allegedly linked to the absence of Jimmy Michael James Akena from the upcoming presidential ballot. Sources indicate that the primary meeting point for supporters is at the residence of UPC President Jimmy Akena in Senior Quarters, Lira City.
However, authorities have clarified that they have not received any official notifications regarding such plans from the Office of the Inspector General of Police. Any attempt to hold unauthorised demonstrations will therefore be deemed illegal and subject to strict legal action.
Security agencies have reassured residents of Lango and North Kyoga that the region remains peaceful and safe. They emphasised that individuals attempting to undermine this peace will face firm legal repercussions.
Citizens are encouraged to stay vigilant and uphold the rule of law. Any suspicious activities or individuals with intentions of causing unrest should be promptly reported to the nearest police station.
JP Okema, North Kyoga Police Relations Officer, stated that police officers are on high alert and prepared to prevent and respond to any illegal activities. He urged UPC supporters to follow proper channels and procedures if they wish to voice grievances concerning Jimmy Akena’s absence from the ballot, emphasising the importance of lawful expression.
Authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the region, calling on all political actors and citizens to prioritise dialogue and lawful means of expressing their views.
As the situation unfolds, the focus remains on preserving order and ensuring the wellbeing of all residents in Lango and North Kyoga.
