The 4th Infantry Division Commander has issued a stern warning to individuals spreading false rumours about a planned human sacrifice near Karuma bridge, stating that legal action will be pursued. The rumour falsely alleged that “400 heads” would be sacrificed before the bridge’s reopening.
During a press briefing on 20 November 2024 in Gulu city, Gen. Felix Busizoori and SSP Samuel Asiimwe, the Regional Police Commander for Aswa west, strongly condemned the misinformation and assured the public that steps are being taken to identify and apprehend those responsible.
“We are taking every measure to track down those responsible for spreading these damaging lies. It is completely untrue that such an event could occur in Uganda,” Gen. Busizoori asserted, emphasising that the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) are fully committed to ensuring the region’s safety.
The fabricated story has caused widespread fear in the local community, with Gen. Busizoori warning that such rumours are intended to undermine the government, particularly as the political campaign season approaches. “These rumours are designed to create panic and discredit the government,” he stated.
SSP Asiimwe highlighted the role of social media in spreading the rumours, noting that some individuals are using smartphones to share misleading images from unrelated events. “The misuse of smartphones for malicious purposes is a growing concern,” he remarked.
Authorities have confirmed that no decapitations have occurred. The only reported murder was the tragic killing of a six-year-old boy in Amuru district, which is unrelated to the rumours.
The circulation of these false rumours has caused significant anxiety, affecting students, business owners, travellers, farmers, and security personnel throughout the region.
