The Achol-pii Barracks in Pader district was the site of a significant ceremony, where 41 officers from the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) 5th Division Brigade were formally honoured and retired.

The event, which took place on October 29, 2024, was presided over by Brigadier General Keith Katungi, the 5th Division Commander. The ceremony brought together division commanders, local leaders, and community members to celebrate the retirees, whose service extended across 15 districts.

Brig. Gen. Katungi commended the retired officers for their dedication and sacrifice throughout their service, emphasising that each retiree had completed transition training. This training included guidance, counseling, and financial literacy, ensuring that all retirement benefits were fully processed.

“I encourage you to invest wisely in productive areas such as agriculture, business, and community development,” he stated, reminding them to uphold the discipline acquired during their service. Katungi also urged the community to provide support to these returning veterans as they reintegrate.

Pader district LC5 Chairperson, Rtd. Col. Fearless Obwoya Oyat, praised the retirees’ commitment and encouraged those interested in public service to consider stepping into political and leadership roles to foster community growth.

Among the retirees was Mrs. Adero Lilly Okot, a 58-year-old former officer from Kaabong district. After 27 years of service, Adero expressed her excitement about returning home, stating, and “I am proud to have achieved my mission of promoting peace.” She advised women still in service to maintain discipline and prepare early for retirement.

This event shows the brigade’s dedication to honouring UPDF veterans and easing their transition into civilian life, demonstrating the army’s continued commitment to its personnel and the communities they return to serve.
