Residents of Pader District have welcomed an ambitious environmental initiative by the LCV-Elect, Akena Alfred, to plant one million trees over the next five years, describing it as a timely response to the worsening effects of climate change in Northern Uganda.
Across villages and urban cells, community members say prolonged drought, declining soil fertility, and unpredictable rainfall have disrupted livelihoods that depend heavily on agriculture.
Many residents believe the tree-planting programme could help restore rainfall patterns, protect the environment, and create economic opportunities.
Odongkara Danish, the Local Council I Chairperson of Oyeyeng Village in Ogom Parish, said the initiative addresses a long-standing gap between Northern Uganda and other regions.
“When you compare us with Central and Western Uganda, you see the difference. They embraced tree planting early and now receive more rain, while we face drought. This programme is necessary,” he said.
Odongkara pledged to mobilise villagers, ensure trees are planted, and monitor progress at the grassroots level.
In Pader Town Council, residents have also called for inclusive implementation.
Aber Sarah, a resident of Oloki Lee Cell in Lagwi Parish, welcomed the plan but emphasised the need for community sensitisation.
“People need to understand the benefits of tree planting,” she said, adding that the district should lobby for seedlings. “Some residents cannot afford to buy seedlings, but if they are provided, people are ready to plant.”
According to Akena Alfred, the initiative originally outlined in his manifesto is now a leadership commitment aimed at environmental protection and income generation.
He added that the manifesto-based initiative will involve youth, leaders, partners, and the private sector, with district support, and is a shared responsibility for Pader’s future.
