A section of reformed rustlers in Kotido district has told Etoil A Karamoja radio that they now feel a sense of relief and peace ever since they voluntarily handed over their guns to government.

The district has of late registered an influx in the number of Karachunas embracing the voluntary handover of illegal guns after president Museveni granted raiders amnesty.

The latest incident that happened on Saturday saw Lokwii Nakouseme from Napumpum sub county who has been on army’s wanted list and two of his colleagues Akut Apalokutan of Rikitae, and Toturo Lokwadongei hand over their shared gun.

Speaking to our reporter Lokwii narrated that he has been living in constant fear of both other raiders and security personnel noting that ever since he handed over the gun, he has been able to sleep, eat good meals as well as mingle with the local leaders and security personnel without fear.

Lokwii who now hopes for a better life and a peaceful Karamoja has since formed a group of disarmed youths to help mobilize other youths for peace, and disarmament but asks for assistance from government.

Loturo Lokwadongei another reformed raider and a colleague to Lokwii says that it was extremely difficult for them to access even the most basic needs while in the bush but things are now different ever since they handed over the gun.

Loturo also revealed many Karachunas were forced to the bush by the previous army leadership that had resorted to forceful means to recover the guns compared to the current leadership that encourages voluntary means.
