Abim District: Miss Tourism Karamoja, Racheal Akidi has taken on a significant role in promoting environmental conservation in her community.
Her initiative to plant trees in Abim district is a commendable effort to mitigate the effects of climate change. “We are excited to be part of this project, which aims to not only provide shade and improve air quality but also to create a sustainable source of income for local communities through the sale of fruits, timber, and other forest products,” Akidi said.
Karamoja region has been experiencing the harsh effects of climate change, including unpredictable weather patterns, droughts, and land degradation.
These changes have had a significant impact on the livelihoods of local communities, who depend heavily on agriculture and livestock for their survival.
Akidi’s initiative is a timely intervention that aims to reduce the vulnerability of local communities to climate change. “Climate change is a real threat to our livelihoods, and we need to take action to mitigate its effects,” Akidi emphasized.
The tree-planting exercise is being carried out in Abim district, with a focus on planting indigenous tree species that are well-suited to the local climate. The trees will be planted in community-owned forests, schools, and other public spaces.
Akidi hopes that the project will not only provide environmental benefits but also serve as a model for sustainable development in the region. “We are planting trees that are not only beneficial to the environment but also provide economic benefits to the local communities,” Akidi said.
Akidi recognizes the importance of community engagement and participation in the project. She has been working closely with local leaders and community members to raise awareness about the importance of tree planting and climate change mitigation.
The community has been involved in the planning and implementation of the project, ensuring that their needs and concerns are taken into account. “We believe that community participation is key to the success of this project,” Akidi said.
Despite the many benefits of tree planting, Akidi has faced several challenges in implementing the project. These include limited resources, harsh weather conditions, and pests and diseases that can damage the trees.
However, Akidi has overcome these challenges through innovative tree-planting techniques, community mobilization, and partnership with local organizations. “We have learned to adapt to the challenges and find solutions that work for us,” Akidi said.
To ensure the sustainability of the project, Akidi plans to engage the local community in tree care and maintenance, establish a nursery for future tree planting, and collaborate with local organizations to secure funding and resources.
