Locals in Kotido district have been warned against vandalizing irrigation equipment that will be set up at different sites in the district.

The warning was sounded recently by the district production officer Robert Kennedy Okuda during the Kotido district awareness meeting on micro scale irrigation plan. The meeting attracted a number of stakeholders including extension workers, NGO’s agricultural officers, and district officials among others.

Speaking during the meeting Okuda observed that the communities should instead embrace the program to change lives. He explained that scrap dealers have often destroyed valuable items in order to earn quick money, something he says will threaten the success of the project.

Bernard Obin the senior district Agricultural officer said they plan to mitigate some of these challenges, by installing most of the irrigation sites in public institutions that have enough security. He added that they will also work hand in hand with the district security organs to make sure that the project runs smoothly.

SP Juston Tugaineyo the Kotido district police Commander however, said there is need for community policing so that the locals are briefed about such issues. He advises that irrigation equipment should be labeled for easy identification.
