Only 19% of Kotido district political leaders and 30% of municipal political leaders have complied with the legal requirement to declare their incomes and liabilities to the Inspector General of Government (IGG).

The revelation was made during the visit of the Deputy IGG, Dr. Patricia Achan Okiria, and her team to Kotido on Tuesday.

Jaram Magyezi, the Director of the Leadership Court Tribunal in the office of the IGG, said that the low turnout is concerning, adding that most political leaders tend to declare their assets on the last day, which he noted is not secure.

The declaration of assets, incomes, and liabilities for this year runs until 31st March 2025.

The law requires every new leader to declare their assets, income, and liabilities within three months of assuming office.

However, David Lokure, the Kotido District IT officer, attributes the low participation in the declaration exercise to computer illiteracy, particularly in the use of emails among the elected leaders.

The Deputy IGG urged the leaders to take the declaration exercise seriously, warning that failure to comply may result in legal consequences.
