Medics in Kyegegwa intensify surveillance against measles amid rising cases

Medics in Kyegegwa have continued intensifying surveillance in response to the recent measles outbreak in the district, amid rising cases.

Reports indicates that its now close to a month since the disease was confirmed in the district.

The latest report as of 21st April 2026, also indicates that the district has 07 confirmed cases, 64 suspected cases with at least 01 suspected death, with 17 subcounties so affected. 

While addressing the district measles tasks force, at the district headquarters on Wednesday 21st April, a meeting that was chaired by the assistant RDC Kyegegwa Bernard Mumbere, Dr. Mulumba Richard, who is the District Health Officer noted that 05 were admitted and 29 recovered completely and have no signs and symptoms.

He also added that the district received 50,000 additional doses of Measles Rubella from National Medical Stores to support the mini campaign vaccination exercise.

Dr. Nuwamanya Yasiini an epidemiologist Ministry of health (UNEPI), attributed the persistent outbreaks of measles in the district to some people who are hesitant as result of their perception towards immunisation vaccines.

He also outlined some of the long term complications as a result of measles such as affecting the brain, loss of immunity, loss of sight among others.

In his communication, Ronald Mugabe, the district surveillance focal person, roared that they have launched mass immunisation campaign for all the children who are between 09 months and 10 years regardless of whether they were immunised before or not.
