Patients cry negligence at Bwizi Health Centre III in Kamwenge

Health workers at Bwizi Health Centre III in Kibale East Constituency, Kamwenge District, are under scrutiny over alleged negligence of duty following a miscarriage involving an expectant mother.

Bwizi Health Centre III was recently elevated from HC II status to improve the quality of healthcare through integrated support supervision. However, concerns have been raised by community members over several issues affecting service delivery at the facility, ranging from poor sanitation to alleged mistreatment of patients by staff.

The concerns came to light after Mrs Kirabo Agnes, a resident of Biguli Sub-county, reportedly arrived at the health facility at around 7:00am on Monday, June 29, 2026, seeking antenatal care. Kirabo alleges that upon arrival there was no medical personnel available to attend to her until she went into labour and gave birth in the hospital toilet.

In severe pain and struggling for survival, she said nearby residents attempted to contact the doctor in charge of the maternity ward, but their efforts were unsuccessful. The newborn reportedly died in the process.

Following the incident, Tumuhimbise Godwin, the District Male Councillor representing Bwizi Sub-county, rushed to the facility.

He reported the matter to the district authorities, calling for firm action against what he described as irresponsible health workers who have made it a habit to report late for work and neglect their duties.

The facility in-charge, Tuhimbise Abdenego, was yet to comment on the matter.

When contacted, Dr William Mucunguzi, the Kamwenge District Health Officer, expressed regret over the incident. He said the district will investigate the matter and take appropriate disciplinary action against any health workers found culpable, in order to ensure improved service delivery.
