Authorities intervene to restore electricity in Mpumudde Sembabule district

The Uganda Electricity Distribution Company limited (UEDCL) has assured residents of Mpumudde trading center in Sembabule district of a long-term solution to power blackout, which was primarily caused by the breakdown of the electricity transformer.

The UEDCL manager for Ntuusi branch, Mr Rukundo Baker, acknowledged receiving complains from community members and leaders who have wrote to his office requesting for intervention, following a prolonged period without electricity which has greatly affected their daily business.

The transformer, installed in Mpumudde trading center in Kyeera subcounty Sembabule district, reportedly became faulty in March 2026, pushing residents into an unexpected blackout with some resorting to solar power which they say remains inadequate to keep some businesses operational.

According to the district councilor for Kyeera sub county, Mr Tumwesigye Amon, the most affected traders are ones who operate maize milling machines, milk dairies, metal fabrication, saloon, and shops that relied much on refrigerators.

During an interview with Kyaka FM radio on Wednesday July 22, 2026, the UEDCL manager Mr Rukundo said that he has forwarded the matter to the head office in Kampala, and noted that the company plans to replace the faulty transformer with a stronger one that will serve a wider population.

According to him, the work is expected to be done within a short time, urging community members to remain cooperative as authorities work out on the issue.
