Kyegegwa authorities push to operationalise newly created Kijongobya Sub County

In a bid to improve accountability and to bring services closer to people, authorities in Kyegegwa district are pushing to operationalise the newly created Kijongobya sub county, expected to be curved from Ruyonza sub county in Kyaka South constituency.

The revelation came in remarks made by LCV Chairperson for Kyegegwa district, Norman Birungi, during a press conference at the district headquarters on Friday June 10, 2026. He said that Kijongobya sub county has to officially start operations before end of this year.

Chairperson Mr Birungi noted that Kyegegwa district will conduct elections to choose pioneer leadership of the sub county, collectively with bi-election to fill several vacant electoral positions in which former elected representatives missed swearing in.

The bi-elections will include replacement of late Vicent Kahone who died before taking oath, following his re-election as the LC111 Chairperson for Rwentuuha sub county, according to Norman Birungi.

The chairperson also highlighted on the outbreak of foot and mouth disease (FMD), noting that the district has received over 30,000 doses of vaccine from the Central Government to help in fight against the deadly pandemic that had affected livestock in several localities within the district.

Besides FMD, Birungi offered to calm residents who were shaken by suspected Ebola virus cases, saying that all suspected cases in Kyegegwa district turned negative after laboratory tests, following a recommended 21 days isolation.

On the side of infrastructure, the chairperson assured residents that several roads are set to be rehabilitated; these include the one connecting sub counties of Migongwe, Migamba, Rwentuha, and Kazinga town council.

The district will also work on Nabingoola -Kasule -Mukyeya -Hapuuyo road. According to Birungi, these two projects were put in first quarter of the financial year 2026/27 and rehabilitation works are expected to commence before November this year.

The District Resident Commissioner for Kyegegwa, Col Rtd Alex Bright Nzirimu, expressed concern over rampant unlawful activities in the district, which include livestock theft, and incidents involving stealing coffee from plantations. He assured public that sub county security committees and vigilantes have been put in place to curb the vice, warning that anyone who fall a culprit will face the law.
