The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), security officials, and the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance have urged radio broadcasters in Northern Uganda and the West Nile region to uphold professionalism, accuracy, and fairness as the country approaches the election period.

Speaking during the Regional Broadcasters Stakeholder Engagement held on Friday, 26 September 2025, at Bomah Hotel in Gulu City, UCC’s Executive Director of Corporate Affairs, Fred Otunu, reminded broadcasters of their constitutional responsibilities.

“We should help shape public opinion to enable people to exercise their constitutional rights. Broadcasters must ensure that information is accurate, balanced, and fair, and that stations comply with broadcasting standards,” Otunu said.

The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) spokesperson, Maj. Gen. Felix Kulayigye, emphasised the role of the media in safeguarding democracy.

“The failure of the state is dangerous for everyone. Democracy cannot exist without security. Anyone spreading violent messages must not be allowed on your airwaves because words can protect security as much as weapons,” Kulayigye warned.

Meanwhile, the State Minister for Information, ICT, and National Guidance, Kabyanga Godfrey, reassured broadcasters of government support in maintaining stability during the elections.

“The army will be available to maintain peace and security during elections because the police cannot be everywhere. Every radio broadcaster must be as fair and balanced as possible. Unofficial tallying of votes on the radio is strictly prohibited,” he said.

The engagement, organised by UCC, brought together broadcasters from across the Northern and West Nile sub-regions to discuss their role in promoting peace, accurate information, and responsible journalism during the electoral period.
