Karamoja drought resilience project launched

The Ministry of water and environment in collaboration with German cooperation-GIZ with funding from KFW development bank has launched the Karamoja drought resilience project.

The project is aimed at ensuring that nomadic, semi-nomadic livestock keepers’ and indigenous people from Karamoja, the Turkana, Pokot in Kenya and the Toposa from south Sudan have access to clean water for their animals in the dry season.

In Karamoja, the 94 billion Uganda shillings project will benefit the districts of Kaabong, Kotido, Nakapiripirit and Amudat.

Speaking during the launch the commissioner of water for production Engineer Gilbert Kimanzi said the project will see two 3 billion liters mega dams constructed in Nangolol-Apolon in Nakapeilimoru Sub County in Kotido district and Lemsui in Moruita Sub County in Nakapiripirit district.

Kimanzi added that, 3 valley tanks and 4 boreholes associated to the dam site will be spread across the 4 districts to address water challenges for the pastoralists and their animals.

The permanent secretary Ministry of water and environment, Alfred Okot Okidi says that the ministry is committed to making Karamoja drought resilient.

Ambrose Onoria the Kotido RDC applauded the government and GIZ for the intervention saying this will also improve the income of the pastoralist as there will be a lot of movements between the pastoral communities
