Karamoja can be turned into an agricultural hub-says Tayebwa

The Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa has said that Karamoja sub-region has got enormous potential to become the food basket of Uganda and region.

Tayebwa was speaking during the consecration of Rev. Canon Simon Akol Aisu as the 2nd Bishop of North Karamoja Diocese on Sunday 12th February 2023 at Christ Chruch Cathedral Kotido

The deputy speaker who represented President Yoweri Museveni said the government has already discussed means including irrigation schemes to help turn the region into Uganda’s food basket.

He also disclosed that President and First Lady Janet Museveni are very passionate about Karamoja, adding that what is only needed is to tap in to the potential of Karamoja and give capacity to the region to feed her people.

Tayebwa also promised to broker an urgent meeting between Karamoja MPs and the President to further discuss food security in Karamoja

John Bosco Akore the secretary Kotido elder’s council said that the elders in Kotido had already donated over 200 acres of land towards the commercialization of agriculture but they are faced with the challenge of tractors to open the land.
