The Tekwaro Me Lango has launched an ambitious initiative to plant 10 million trees across the Lango subregion within the next five years in a major push for environmental conservation.
Patrick Okullo Okeng, Minister for Information of Tekwaro Me Lango, announced the campaign following a recent donation of 10,000 fruit tree seedlings to the institution by Roofings Uganda Limited.
The donation included jackfruit and Hass avocado seedlings and was officially received by the cultural leadership at Lango Cultural Centre.
According to Okullo Okeng, the tree planting drive is being championed by the Paramount Chief of Tekwaro Me Lango, Eng. Dr. Michael Moses Odongo Okune, as part of broader efforts to promote environmental sustainability in the region.
While receiving the donation, Willy Omodo Omodo, Speaker of the Lango Cultural Institution, noted that the Office of the Paramount Chief had initially requested 50,000 seedlings from Roofings Uganda Limited. He emphasised the strategic selection of fruit trees due to their dual value for both nutrition and income generation.
Omodo further revealed that the seedlings will be distributed to clan leaders for use as demonstration tools within their communities.
Other recipients include Ibuje Archdeaconry, Alenga Parish, the Church of Uganda, Catholic and Pentecostal Assemblies of God (PAG) churches in Oyam, Bata Secondary School, Amach Archdeaconry, Agweng Catholic Parish, and several schools in Kwania district.
Joel Agabi, Minister for Environment at Tekwaro Me Lango, urged the community to take collective responsibility in protecting the environment through widespread tree planting efforts.
