Some embattled leaders of the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) in Kole district have threatened to go to court to challenge the election of the new district party chairperson, Sharon Lamuno, who was elected on Saturday, 21 July 2024.
George Ewal Alango, who has been serving as the acting UPC party chairperson for Kole district, told a press conference that he has given UPC leaders three days to annul Sharon Lamuno’s election. Failing this, they will seek legal redress.
Ewal Alango stated that he has already informed his lawyer, Abwang Otim of Opok and Company Advocates, about his intention to take the party to court. He stated that UPC Party President, Jimmy Akena Obote, had initially halted the election of the Kole district chairperson and questioned why the Party Secretary General, Fred Ebil Ebil, proceeded to organise the election.
Ewal Alango also asserted that he remains the legitimate UPC party chairperson for Kole district. UPC Party Advisor for Kole district, Mzee Robert Oming Ajuro, accused Fred Ebil Ebil of disrespecting the party and failing to follow its guidelines.
He further accused Fred Ebil Ebil of collaborating with the ruling NRM party to create confusion and undermine the UPC party.
Amos Ojok, a UPC delegate from Kole North, said that many people expressed interest in contesting for the Kole UPC chairperson seat, but to their dismay, Ebil Ebil reportedly blocked them in favour of Sharon Lamuno Ogwal.
UPC Secretary General Fred Ebil Ebil, speaking after the election of Sharon Lamuno as the UPC party chairperson for Kole district, urged those dissatisfied with the election to unite and work together for the development of the party.
