Alebtong district local government has banned the sale, slaughter and consumption of cattle following an outbreak of foot and mouth disease as well as black quarter (black leg) disease.

This came as cases of foot and mouth disease and black quarter disease were reported among cattle in Adwir Sub County.

Alebtong district production officer, Dr. Charles Noki confirmed the outbreak of the diseases in Adwir Sub County but said the ban on sale, slaughter and consumption of cattle has been instituted in the entire Alebtong district.

Noki said they will write to ministry of agriculture to take action into the matter.

Alebtong district chairman David Kennedy Odongo called for prompt action from government to fight further spread of the cattle diseases.

Odongo DK said they have also temporarily stopped the operations of Adwir market that holds on Fridays, Ajuri market that holds on Tuesday and other markets where cattle is sold as a measure to scale down the spread of the diseases.

Odongo DK adds that they will work with government to ensure farmers are given veterinary drugs to fight the diseases.
