Over one ton of fake seeds impounded in Lira

Security in Lira City and district as well as leaders of Lango Agro input Dealers Association yesterday impounded over one ton of fake seeds from agro input shops in Lira city.

The fake seeds were taken to Lira Central Police station and their owners were made to record statements.

Patrick Alip, the senior District Agricultural Officer of Lira District said the counterfeit seeds impounded include that of DK maize variety and Sunflower.

Assistant commissioner in ministry of agriculture also Lira district agricultural officer, Dorcus Alum said the affected agro input shops will be closed as well as those that are not registered and operating illegally.

The chairperson Lango Agro input dealers Association, Patrick Ogwang said they are currently conducting operations to weed out fake seeds on sale in Lango.

Ogwang adds that people who will be found dealing in fake seeds will be fined one million shillings and another one million shillings that they will pay the whistle blowers who report them.

However, some of the agro input dealers blamed their suppliers saying the seeds that are usually supplied to them are tricky to verify whether they are fake or not.
