Uganda is registering a surge in cases of diabetes.

According to a study conducted by the Economic Policy Research Centre, there has been a notable increase in the number of diabetes cases in Uganda, particularly among individuals aged 40 and older.

The research reveals that in 2014, the prevalence of diabetes was only 1.4%, but by 2024, it had risen to 3.3%.

Additionally, the study found that in 2022, Ugandans spent shs1.4 billion on diabetes treatment, while the government allocated shs130 billion to provide diabetes patients with medication.

Dr. Tony Odung, the health officer of Alebtong District, stated that type 2 diabetes and hypertension are lifestyle diseases that can be attributed to dietary habits, the use of non-prescribed drugs, and alcohol consumption, among other factors.

He urged the public to adopt a balanced diet and engage in physical exercise as preventive measures against these diseases. Furthermore, he warned against the consumption of fatty foods, which can lead to vein blockage and pose serious health risks.

The Economic Policy Research Centre recommends that the government increase funding to support mass awareness campaigns aimed at preventing the development of lifestyle diseases.

Diabetes is defined by the World Health Organisation as a chronic disease that occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood glucose.
