Religious leaders from the Inter-Religious Council of Uganda have attributed the rising HIV cases in Uganda to the reckless lifestyles being led by the youth. They cite drunkenness, watching pornographic material, and house parties as leading factors contributing to the surge in new HIV infections.
The Chairperson of the Inter-Religious Council and Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, the Most Rev. Dr Steven Kazimba Mugalu, has called on the government to organise various consultative meetings to discuss strategies aimed at curbing the rising HIV cases.
He said that the youth have also developed a tendency of paying commercial sex workers for sex, which is further exacerbating the HIV burden.
The Uganda AIDS Commission, in its report, noted that at least 54 people die from HIV daily in Uganda, while 105 people contract the virus each day. Mbarara, Fort Portal, and Mbale are the districts with the highest HIV prevalence.
