Four companies have expressed interest in managing plastic waste in Lira City, aiming to collect and recycle 40,000 tons of plastic annually.
In the current financial year 2024/2025, Mukwano Group, Coca-Cola, and other partners have already collaborated to collect 40,000 tons of plastic waste in the city for recycling purposes.
Speaking to journalists at Lira Diocese Ordination Grounds, ahead of the belated celebration of World Environment Day for Uganda slated for today, Lira City Environment Officer Leonard Otika confirmed that four companies are currently involved in plastic waste management efforts in the city.
These include:
Otika said the companies have created employment for local residents by engaging them in plastic collection and recycling activities.
However, he noted that plastic pollution remains a significant challenge in Lira City, frequently leading to blocked water channels, which are costly to clear.
World Environment Day, officially commemorated on June 5th under the global theme “Beat Plastic Pollution”, is being marked today in Uganda.
The national celebration will take place in Kabale District, with President Yoweri Museveni expected to be the chief guest.
In Lira City, the event is being held at the Mayor’s Garden and is officiated by Lira Diocese.
Lira Diocese Project Coordinator, Dina Apio, emphasized that the initiative aligns with the late Pope Francis’ call to protect the environment.
Apio added that today’s celebrations include several activities such as community clean-ups across selected areas in Lira City, public processions, and a celebration led by the Bishop of Lira Diocese, Sanctus Lino Wanok.
