Wetland encroachers along River Muzizi must vacate

15 March 2024, 11:39 am

The Ministry of Water and Environment is set to resume enforcement on demarcations and ensuring that encroachers of wetlands mostly along river Muziizi must vacate before the end of this month.

In July last year, the Ministry launched the demarcation of river Muziizi boundaries using pillars whereby 120 pillars were installed in most affected areas of Karama and Bubango.

Charles Kaahwa, the Kibaale District Environment Officer says that the ministry demarcated at least 15.2Km along the river and the officials granted a grace period of 5 months to people who were found to have encroached on the wetland to harvest their garden crops and vacate, a period that has elapsed by now.

He says that the affected people have turned a deaf ear to the officials plea.

Kaahwa adds that this month officials from the ministry will conduct an engagement meeting with Kibaale district stakeholders to lay strategies on how to deal with the adamant individuals.
