Several properties worth millions of shillings have been destroyed after a fire gutted Savanah Resort and Guest House in Nyamarunda town council, Kibaale district.
The fire broke out on Sunday morning, destroying the club section, including the music/public address system, beverages, projector, fridge, and other valuables estimated at over 90 million shillings.
Benon Kwizera, the proprietor of Savanah Resort and Guest House, revealed that the fire spread from garbage that was being burned by a resort attendant, identified as Immaculate Natukunda, early in the morning.

Kwizera said that after noticing the flames, residents intervened to put out the fire. However, their efforts were insufficient, though they managed to prevent it from spreading to nearby buildings.
He added that police officers from Nyamarunda Police Station responded to the incident.
Natukunda, who allegedly started the fire while burning garbage nearby, stated that she did not expect the flames to spread and engulf the building.
Concerned residents at the scene expressed frustration, saying that if a police fire brigade had been available in the region, the flames could have been extinguished before causing significant damage.
Daisy Nakazi, the LC3 Chairperson of Nyamarunda town council, noted that this is the second business in one week to be destroyed by fire. She urged the government to establish a nearby police fire brigade to enhance emergency response.
Following the incident, Natukunda was dismissed by her employer and was later seen heading to her parents’ home in Bukonda village, Kabasekende subcounty.
