Locals count losses as hailstorm destroys property, crops in Kibaale

Residents of two parishes in Nyamarunda Sub-county, Kibaale District, are counting losses after a heavy downpour characterized with hailstone and strong winds hit the area, destroying property and crops and killing domestic birds.

The affected areas include Kibogo and Kyaanyi parishes, with villages such as Kibogo, Igimbi, Kamwookya, Kazooba and Nankulabye among those affected.

Local leaders and residents, led by Nyamarunda Sub-county Speaker Wilber Kakuru, say the hailstorm affected 13 households and destroyed agricultural crops with five domestic birds killed during the disaster.

The leaders are appealing to the government to intervene and provide relief support to the affected residents to help them recover from the disaster.

Fred Senyonjo, the Nyamarunda Sub County Agriculture Extension Worker says they will compile a report on the affected locals for possible help from government but urged residents to plant more trees as one way of protecting the environment and reducing the impact of such disasters.
