Residents of two parishes in Nyamarunda Sub-county, Kibaale District, are counting their losses after a heavy downpour accompanied by hailstones and strong winds hit the area, destroying property and crops and killing domestic birds.
The affected areas include Kibogo and Kyaanyi parishes, with villages such as Kibogo, Igimbi, Kamwookya, Kazooba and Nankulabye among those affected.
Local leaders and residents, led by Nyamarunda Sub-county Speaker Wilber Kakuru, said the hailstorm affected 13 households, destroyed agricultural crops and killed five domestic birds.
The leaders are appealing to the government to intervene and provide relief support to the affected residents to help them recover from the disaster.
Fred Senyonjo, the Nyamarunda Sub-county Agriculture Extension Worker, said they would compile a report on the affected residents to seek possible government assistance. He also urged residents to plant more trees as a way of protecting the environment and reducing the impact of such disasters.
