Bishop of Lira Diocese has asked government to launch a probe into cattle raids in Otuke and Alebtong districts by suspected Karamojong cattle rustlers.

In a press conference held at the Uganda Martyrs Cathedral, Lira, Bishop Sanctus Lino Wanok said they suspects that the cattle theft in the two districts is being done by both the cattle rustlers and some cattle thieves disguising as Karamojong cattle rustlers.

He said the Karamojong cattle rustlers are known for walking on foot with stolen animals but of late, those who steal the cattle are using Lorry vehicles and moving with the stolen cattle to Kampala and neighboring Kenya and passing through road blocks.

Bishop Wanok said the cattle thieves could be some criminal elements who need to be identified by the government and followed with the law. He adds that most of the Karamojong have already been disarmed and have embarked on framing to earn a living, meaning there could be other people responsible for the cattle raids.

He said as religious leaders, they are engaging elders from Lango, and Karamoja to reconcile the two tribes to bring to an end the long standing disunity between them.
