Lira City.

The Vice Chancellor of Lira University, Prof Jasper Ogwal Okeng has indefinitely suspended four students from the University over allegation of participating in an illegal demonstration.

The students who have been suspended from the University are; Ronald Mbinga Kule the guild speaker, Lubwama Joseph, Sserwanga Joshua and Mutebi Rodney Christopher.

According to the Vice Chancellor, the top management in its emergency meeting held on the 10th of May 2023, resolved to suspend the students from the University with immediate effect for allegedly participating in an illegal demonstration to allow for further investigations.

Ogwal Okeng in his suspension letter to the students dated 10th May 2023, which Voice of Lango has seen a copy contends that the four students grossly violated rules and regulations of the Lira University student’s code of regulations (2018).

The senior communications officer of Lira University, Patrick Opio told Voice of Lango FM that the University took the decision in order to pave way for further investigations.

Opio on students’ suspension

According to Opio, the students have also been directed to vacate University premises with immediate effect and should not appear at any installations of Lira University until the case against them has been disposed off.

Majority of the students who are on government sponsorship on Monday 8th May 2023, staged a nonviolent demonstration against the leadership of the University over failures to address a plethora of challenges affecting their learning at Campus.

The students accused Ogwal Okeng’s administration of illegal smuggling of Uganda shillings 336,000 in the tuition structure of government students, something they say is not happening in any public university in Uganda.

The students also faulted the University Management over failure to rectify students portal in which many students had gone for more two semesters without accessing their results and failure to pay faculty, internship and recess allowances, and immediate installation of street lights along University streets amongst others.
