Gideon Omony, esteemed journalist and educator, dies after kidney battle

Lango veteran journalist Gideon Omony has died at Kirudu Referral Hospital in Kampala. Gideon Omony, who worked at Radio Waa and was also a teacher at Fatima Aloi Girls’ Comprehensive School, passed away at around 7:45 PM on 15 August 2024.

At the time of his death, he was battling kidney complications and was undergoing dialysis at Lira Regional Referral Hospital and Kirudu Referral Hospital in Kampala.  Efforts were also being made to raise funds to pay for his kidney transplant.

The secretary, Lango Radio Owners and Managers Association (LAROMA) BF Otim Ogwal confirmed Gideon Omony’s death.

Otim Ogwal said Gideon’s death has left a significant void among journalists in Lango that will be hard to fill. Omony died at the age of 45 and is survived by his widow, Jane Achola Omony.

The body of the late Gideon Omony will be retrieved from Lira Regional Referral Hospital, where it was taken yesterday, 16th August, for preservation, and will be taken to his home in Angetangwet, Lira city east division, next week on Wednesday, 21st August. A requiem mass will be held at Uganda Martyrs Cathedral, Lira, at 10 am on Thursday, 22nd August. The burial will take place on Friday, 23rd August, in Barr Subcounty, Lira district, starting with a funeral mass at 10 am.
