The territorial police in Kamuli district are investigating the cause of a fatal road accident that claimed the lives of three people and left seven others injured. The accident involved a Tata truck, registration number UBM 106Q, which was transporting sugarcane.

The incident occurred at Nawanyago, along the Kamuli–Jinja highway.

According to preliminary investigations, the truck was travelling from Kamuli towards Jinja when the driver lost control upon reaching Nawanyago. The vehicle overturned, killing three people instantly and injuring seven others who had been seated on top of the sugarcane.

The deceased have been identified as:

  • Nicholas Koozala, 25, a Musoga and resident of Itukulu, Bukaya zone, Nawanyago sub county.
  • Derick Kibikyo, 16, a Musoga and resident of Bukula village, Nawanyago.
  • Asadi Ssajjabi, 26, a resident of Buwolero–Mawolero Zone, Buwenge Rural, Jinja district.

The seven injured victims, whose identities are yet to be established, were rushed to undisclosed health facilities for treatment.

Traffic police officers visited the scene and towed the vehicle to a nearby station pending a full mechanical inspection. The bodies of the deceased were taken to Kamuli General Hospital mortuary for postmortem examination.

The driver reportedly fled the scene following the incident. Police have launched a manhunt to apprehend him.

Commenting on the accident, ASP Michael Kasadha, the Public Relations Officer for Busoga North Regional Police, reiterated the force’s concern over unsafe sugarcane transport practices.

“We re-echo our warning to sugarcane transporters and loaders to take road safety seriously. The practice of travelling on top of heaped cane is extremely dangerous and continues to cost lives,” he said.
