Farmers in Lango who are involved in agroforestry are set to begin receiving payments under the Agroforestry Climate Smart Jobs Project.

In an interview with Voice of Lango, the Managing Director of Nile Forestry Agro, Angole Dorcus, said the initiative is supported by the Palladium Group in partnership with Verst Carbon based in Kenya, Mandulis Energy from Uganda, and Nile Forestry Agro.

The project is being funded through revenue paid by foreign-based industries seeking to offset their carbon emissions.

Angole said that in Lango, they are currently working with 3,500 farmers, with plans to increase the number to 25,000 by the end of the five year project.

In the entire northern Uganda, Angole said they aim to register 50,000 farmers under the program.

She encouraged people with limited land to work with the forestry departments of their respective districts to obtain land offers and practice agroforestry on forest reserves.

Ziana Chelimo, a Carbon Market Associate at Verst Carbon, said once the trees mature, experts will assess the level of toxic emissions absorbed and the size of the land where they were planted, after which farmers will be paid funds for the carbon credits generated.

Gloria Edea, Administration Lead at Mandulis Energy, said they will train farmers through Nile Forestry Agro on how to raise tree seedlings and maintain existing ones to ensure they contribute to the absorption of toxic gases and protect the environment from climate change.

Edea added that Nile Forestry Agro alone targets to plant 6,000 trees under this initiative.
