Hailstorm destroys crops, kills animals in Kibaale

Residents from two sub-counties and one town council are counting their losses after a heavy downpour, accompanied by a hailstorm, destroyed acres of garden crops and killed more than seven domestic animals.

The affected areas include Bukonda Itambiro, which was unroofed, as well as Kasungwa A and B in Kabasekende Sub-county, and Kigando, Kirusura, and Kigaza in Bwamiramira Subcounty.

The victims recounted that the hailstorm, which swept through the area last Sunday evening, destroyed acres of coffee, banana, cassava, maize, and bean plantations, among other crops. They have appealed for urgent assistance from Good Samaritans and political leaders.

In a similar incident, more than 400 residents from Rukindo and Ngangi cells in Kibaale Town Council are also counting their losses after a heavy downpour, accompanied by a hailstorm that lasted for over six hours, devastated their crop gardens.

Approximately 2 acres of beans were destroyed.

They are calling for assistance from the Office of the Prime Minister through the Department of Disaster Preparedness.

Leaders who sympathised with the affected residents included John Mary Tibezinda and Joseph Saazi, the LC3 chairpersons of Kabasekende and Kibaale Town Council; Rose Nsungwa of Kabasekende; and William Sunday, the NRM flag bearer for Kibaale Town Council.
