Livestock farmers in Kibaale District are struggling with a severe shortage of pasture and water following a prolonged dry spell.

A mini-survey conducted in Bubango Sub county indicates that the crisis is being attributed to extended periods of sunshine, climate change driven by deforestation, and overgrazing.

Farmers say the situation has led to high livestock mortality rates and a significant decline in milk production. They are appealing for government intervention to construct water dams, supply seeds for artificial pasture, and implement other supportive measures.

Immaculate Akusekera, the Kibaale District Veterinary Officer, says the dry season exposes animals to several health risks, including worm infestations, tick-borne diseases, and weakened immunity. She advises farmers to shift from extensive to small-scale farming systems, make use of household food residues, and invest in the establishment and preservation of pasture.
