Boda boda riders in Lira City protested this morning against the transfer of Police Commander Abel Ruganza.

The riders, led by Owera Juma, chairperson of the Lira City West Division Boda boda Riders’ Association, marched to the office of Lira Resident City Commissioner Lawrence Egole. They carried placards demanding the withdrawal of DPC Abel’s transfer, the transfer of RCC Egole from Lira City, and for Minister of Health and Lira City Woman MP, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, to stop interfering in security matters.

During the demonstration, Owera Juma expressed disappointment over DPC Ruganza’s transfer, highlighting Ruganza’s efforts in ensuring the security of boda boda riders in Lira city.

Lira City female workers’ councilor Sarah Awor Angweri joined the protest and expressed concerns about the frequent transfer of DPCs from Lira, which she believes is contributing to the deterioration of security in the area. She warned that the protest would persist unless their concerns are addressed and Ruganza’s transfer is revoked.

In response, RCC Egole urged the leaders of the boda boda riders to formally submit their complaint to his office for redress. He assured them that they would meet next week to discuss their welfare.

The Inspector General of Police, Abas Byakagaba, recently reshuffled 145 police officers. Outgoing Lira city police commander, Abel Ruganza, informed Voice of Lango FM that he has been transferred to Agago district and will be succeeded by his counterpart from Agago.

Meanwhile, Wamala regional police commander, ACP Stephen Onencan, has been reassigned to the North Kyoga region, replacing ACP Obura Deo, who recently retired.
